Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy saves millions of teeth each year. Despite what you may have heard, the relatively comfortable procedure alleviates pain rather than causing it. Best of all, it saves damaged teeth, enhances your oral health, and maintains your natural smile!

Why Would You Require Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal treatment is an endodontic procedure designed to restore a tooth with inflamed or infected pulp tissue. Dental pulp damage can result from deep cavities, cracks and chips, trauma to the tooth, or repeated dental procedures.

Tooth pulp damage left untreated won't heal on its own. As the infection progresses, it may lead to complications, including an abscess, which may cause bone loss around the tooth's root. The infection may also move to other areas of the body, with potentially devastating health consequences.

A root canal is the only way to save a natural tooth with pulp tissue infection. Otherwise, we'll need to extract it, meaning you may need a dental implant or bridge to restore your smile.

What Are the Signs of Tooth Pulp Infection?

Signs you may need a root canal treatment include a persistent toothache, gum tenderness, tooth discoloration, injuries, chips, or cracks. Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or a pimple-like bump on the gums may also indicate tooth pulp damage.

What Is the Root Canal Procedure?

We will first numb the area with local anesthesia and administer nitrous oxide or oral sedation, if required, for your comfort. We will make a small opening on the crown of the tooth to access and remove the infected tissue. Next, we will reshape the area and place medication and a substance called gutta-percha to protect the tooth and prevent reinfection. The last step of your root canal treatment is sealing the space with a filling material.

What Happens After Root Canal Therapy?

After removing the tooth pulp, the tooth is brittle and prone to fracture. A dental crown will strengthen the tooth and restore it to its form and function. The procedure involves shaping the tooth then making an impression to send to our laboratory for fabrication. A temporary crown will protect your tooth as you wait.

During an upcoming appointment, we'll ensure your new crown provides a perfect fit and color match, and then we will cement it in place. We will make any adjustments necessary to make sure it’s comfortable. Your restoration will look, feel, and function just like a natural tooth. With proper care, it has the potential of lasting a lifetime!
