At Genuine Smiles, we understand that some of our patients are fearful or anxious about setting foot in a dentist’s office. We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry options to take the edge off your dental visits and allow you to relax in the dentist’s chair
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience during dental procedures. Because it addresses the fears that keep some people from visiting the dentist, patients are more likely to keep up with their routine preventive care, which helps ensure they enjoy optimal oral health.
Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Any patient with dental phobia, an extreme fear of visiting the dentist, is a candidate for dental sedation. It is also recommended for patients with sensitive teeth, a low pain threshold, a bad gag reflex, and past traumatic dental experiences. Sedation dentistry is beneficial to patients who have trouble getting numb, patients with special needs, children who find it challenging to sit still, or those in need of complex or lengthy dental procedures.
What Are the Types of Sedation?
Here are the sedation methods we offer at Guides Smiles:
Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation that involves breathing a combination of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen through a mask. In addition to some tingling and numbness, laughing gas invokes a sense of well-being. You'll be comfortable and relaxed but will stay awake and responsive during dental treatment. Once we remove the mask, the effects of sedation will wear off immediately.
Oral Sedation: Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill about an hour before your scheduled procedure to help you relax and have a positive experience. You'll feel comfortable and drowsy but will stay conscious and responsive to directions. After your treatment is over, you won't remember much of it. You'll need a trusted adult to drive you home after oral sedation for your safety.
