Getting your teeth professionally cleaned is an integral component of preventive dental care designed to halt the onset and progression of dental disease. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends scheduling dental visits at intervals determined by your dentist. Patients with healthy gums and teeth typically require dental visits every six months, while patients with gum disease or those at risk of developing dental problems may require more frequent care.

What Happens During a Routine Dental Cleaning?

Visiting Genuine Smiles for your routine dental cleanings, also known as dental prophylaxis, is one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, and bad breath (halitosis). During your appointment, our dental hygienist will use an instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from around and under the gum line and between the teeth. The next step is using a high-powered brush and a gritty toothpaste to remove surface stains, followed by flossing between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris.

During each visit, we’ll conduct a dental exam to evaluate every aspect of your oral health. We may recommend a fluoride treatment, if necessary, to strengthen your teeth and prevent decay and cavities. The goal of preventive care is to ensure you maintain healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime.

What Happens During a Deep Dental Cleaning?

Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are often warning signs of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. A deep cleaning procedure, known as scaling and root planing, is a highly effective non-surgical approach to reversing gingivitis or managing periodontitis, a more advanced and destructive form of gum disease.

Similar to a routine cleaning, scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from around the gum line and between the teeth. Root planing, on the other hand, involves cleaning and smoothing out rough areas on the tooth-root surfaces. That helps promote gum healing and reattachment. After a deep cleaning, we may recommend more frequent visits for periodontal maintenance to manage the gum infection and prevent it from progressing.
